Show Your Furnace Some Tlc With Annual Maintenance Posted By: Shannon Egan

Your furnace is just like everything else: it needs a little TLC (tender, loving, care) in order to function at its full capacity. But more than likely you are probably like most people and avoid dealing with your furnace until it suddenly stops working. The problem with this is that you end up spending unnecessary dollars on costly repairs or replacements.

So, do not do it. Do not deny your heater what it needs to function effectively and efficiently all year round!

Annual Furnace Inspection Includes:

Thorough cleaning of burners and all air ports.
Oiling of the motor.
Thermostat operation test.
Replace oil filter and/or oil-filled systems.
Draining of the expansion tank
Examination of all parts to ensure they are working properly including blower blades and belt, check dampers, and replace filters (forced air system).
Verification of leaks in pipes, flue, and firebox.
Cleaning of the stack and smoke pipes.

Summer Plumbing Problems: What To Look For Posted By: Carolyn Ethington

Summer is a great time to relax and not worry about plumbing problems, right? After all, the pipes can’t freeze and cause a flood: so what can possibly go wrong? Plenty! Unfortunately, summertime is when our water usage is at its highest level of the year and that makes the hottest months prime time for various and assorted plumbing issues. Here is a quick overview of what to look out for and how to know when it’s time to call a plumber.

–Problem: Watch those sprinkler heads! If you have an automatic irrigation system in place, chances are that some or most of your sprinkler heads are the pop-up variety. Inevitably, a car or a lawn mower will take off the top of that head, resulting in a geyser the next time the system is run.

Solution: Make it a habit to inspect your sprinkler heads often during the season that they are in heavy use, and follow manufacturer’s instruction for proper care and maintenance to prevent “sticking. Continue reading

What Kind of Faucet Do You Have?

The most common causes of dripping taps are worn or loose parts. It will save you tons of time and aggravation if you know what kind of mechanism is operating under the faucet. Compression and ball faucets are the ones most likely to leak, so chances are good you are dealing with one of these two types.

Fixing a Compression Faucet Leak

A compression system will have two separate handles: one for hot water and one for cold, both of which require tightening either to the left or to the right in order to turn off water flow.

–Turn off main water supply and cover drain with a stopper or towel to prevent small parts from falling down the drain. Continue reading
