Your Furnice Filter Posted By: knock-knock

What a Furnace Filter Can do for You

Traditionally, furnace filters were designed to protect the furnace and fans. With increased air quality awareness, some filters are now being installed to reduce exposure to particles which can affect your health.

What Airborne Particles are Found in Your Home?

The particles you breathe in your home come from a variety of sources including:

dust on floors or other surfaces that is disturbed by activity in the house
dust generated by smoking, burning candles, cooking, doing laundry, etc.
hair and skin flakes from humans or pets

Spring Home Maintenance Tips Posted By: Kyle Rosencrans

Here are a few other tips to get through the rest of the winter:

1.The recent freeze/thaw cycles put a strain on your home’s roofing system. Check interior ceilings near outside walls for staining caused by moisture damage. Watch for flooding or moisture damage in the basement. Check basement walls for signs of cracking and moisture damage. Check the hidden corners of your basement for signs of flooding.

2.Help your furnace do its job this month. Cleaning air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators regularly can boost the efficiency of your heating system by 10 per cent. Clean or replace the furnace filter every month. Seal air ducts with duct tape to increase the efficiency of your heating system (use metal duct tape, not the cloth kind.)

3.Keeping your chimney clean reduces fire risk. Minimize creosote build-up by burning dry, well-seasoned wood, burning a brisk fire for at least part of every time you use your fireplace and opening the damper a half hour before lighting the fire to warm the chimney and improve the draw.

4.Prevent excess humidity from causing damage in the home by keeping your humidistat below 40 per cent. Continue reading

Cleaning Your Air Ducts Posted By: Jack Landry

There are services that do this, and it’s a good idea to hire them once a year because they can reach spots in the system that you can’t. But your own lighter monthly duct cleaning will keep the dust at bay.

If you think duct cleaning might be a good idea for your home, but you are not sure, talk to a professional. The company that services your heating and cooling system may be a good source of advice.

You may also want to contact professional duct cleaning service providers and ask them about the services they provide. Remember, they are trying to sell you a service, so ask questions and insist on complete and knowledgeable answers.

Your furnace filter is the first line of defense against airborne contaminants. Furnace filters are so inexpensive and easy to change that there’s little reason not to do it every month, and doing it when you clean the air ducts will help you remember.

Locate the filter on your furnace and note the dimensions listed on the side of the filter. Go to your hardware store and get a replacement of that dimension. Continue reading
